Get Involved - Social Action

| Social Action Committee
The Social Action Committee (SAC) is a diverse
group of individuals committed to the Jewish practice of Tikkun Olam (repairing
the world). Unlike other Temple committees, the SAC is comprised of congregants
from Temple Emanu-El, Temple Beth-El, and Knesseth Israel. We strive to
represent the local Jewish community with outreach projects helping the
underserved and disadvantaged throughout the Birmingham area.
For each
of the past several years, SAC has been involved in over 30 separate projects
(including Mitzvah Day), and has engaged several hundred individuals from the
Jewish Community and from the larger Birmingham community.
The Social
Action Committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at Temple Emanu-El,
and welcomes anyone wishing to become involved. Meetings and updates are
distributed by email and by periodic updates in the Temple bulletin and
electronic newsletter.
The SAC is represented in and partners with
several community organizations, including the following: Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM)
Birmingham Hospitality Network (BHN) Interfaith Hospitality House RUSH (Rural
Self-Help) Initiative Community Kitchens World of Opportunity.
Some of the projects in which SAC members participated include: the AIDS
Walk; serving meals and spending the night with homeless families at Temple
Emanu-El (BHN); serving meals to the homeless at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and
Easter at Grace By Day (Community Kitchens); Mitzvah Day, involving religious
school children and adults from the entire community; NCCJ Walk as One; Hanukkah
blood drives; the High Holy Day food drive and the Purim-to-Pesach food drive.
